FAQs
In addition to developmental editing, can you also do a line edit or copyedit on my work?
No—here’s why: As a best practice, and to ensure a high-quality manuscript, you should hire separate editors for developmental editing and copyediting (and/or line editing, though some copyeditors do line edits as well with a heavy copyedit).
This is also how it’s done in the university press and trade publishing industries, where the philosophy is, the more eyes on a book there are, the better the book will be. Having one person perform multiple editing jobs means that more errors will remain in your finished book or proposal.
For another perspective, here’s a Wired article on why it’s so hard to catch your own typos..
Can I hire you for a copyedit or line edit but not for developmental editing?
At this time, I’m doing developmental edits, which include occasional line edits in addition to plenty of marginal comments and an extensive editorial letter, and manuscript evaluations.
Are you able to do a free sample edit of my manuscript?
Yes, I can do a sample developmental edit or manuscript evaluation of up to ten pages (in Word, double-spaced). Please email me with a few details about the edit, and if the project seems like a good fit for me, I’ll contact you about sending me the pages.
